(The Effect of Tomato Juice and Nutritional Promotion to Life Style and Antioxidant Status of Plasma in patients with Breast Cyst in Dharmais Hospital, Jakarta)

ABSTRACT
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. It is the second leading cause of death by cancer in women, following lung cancer. One way to reduce breast cancer is by preventing or treat breast cysts. The aim of this research was to study the effect of tomato juice and nutritional promotion to life style and status of antioxidants. The study design was one group pre-post test study. Research was conducted in Dharmais hospital, laboratory of Departmen Human Nutrition and Nutrition Research & Development Center on June 2009-April 2010. The tomato juice intervention included a 2-week low antioxidant diet and a 2-week high tomato diet (480 ml tomato juice). 20 woman were participated in the study. Respondents were divided into two groups: one group of 10 normal and 10 cysts. At the beginning and the end of tomato juice intervention, antioxidant status, including level of lycopene and antioxidant activity in plasma were analyzed. The result of the study showed that the mean of lycopene content before tomato juice intervention, in normal group and cyst group were 284.5 ng/l and 310.5 ng/l, respectively. After tomato juice intervention, lycopene content increased significantly, in normal group and cyst group were 716.1 and 671.9 ng/l ; however antioxidant acitivity value did not change significantly. Before tomato juice intervention, nutrition promotion is also given to raise awareness respondents was to consume tomato juice and apply a healthy lifestyle, including physical activity and food consumption variation. However, nutrition promotion did not changed physical activity and food consumption variation significantly.
